Today Mrs Tong shared with the class on one of her favourite Roald Dahl's books: James and the Giant Peach. Selected excerpts from the novel were read in class.Here is the story introduction:
One day, James gets a bag of magic crystals that will free him from life with his horrible aunts. In his excitement, James drops the bag and the crystals are sucked into the ground around the old peach tree. Something magical begins to happen to a peach at the tip of the tree – something that will truly change his life.
Then we watched the first part of the movie.
Here are some questions about the story:
a) What were the creatures found in the giant peach?
b) How did the giant peach fly?
c) What was the bait used to attract the seagulls?
d) What did the characters use to help them navigate out of the icebox?
e) Who played the violin?
f) Where was the giant peach flying to?
g) Which building did the giant peach land on?
The class is to find out the answers as we watch the show.

ReplyDeleteb)In the story, seagulls were tied to the peach stem using spiderwebs from the Spider and strings of white silk from the Silkworm. Then the 502 seagulls lifted the peach and they flew away. That was spectaculars!
c)Mr Earthworm himself was used as the bait to attract the seagulls. Remember the bell hang around Mr Earthworm? That part was really funny!
d)They used a compass taken from a haunted shipwreck to navigate out of the icebox.
e)Yes! The music played by the Old Green Grasshopper on his violin was so enchanting. The part of the show when Grasshopper trying to imitate a cricket was so funny!
f)The Giant Peach flew to New York.
g)It was the Empire State Building.
I'm really glad to see so many of you posting comments to this movie activity on James and the Giant Peach. I'm so happy to see Chong Jun and Sylvester who posted individually for the first time! I'm hoping to see more of you posting comments.

ReplyDeleteIf you have the chance to read other books by Roald Dahl, there are many interesting ones. Some of my favourite are The Witches, The BFG, George's Marvellous Medicine and Esio Trot.
Note: Esio Trot is actually tortoise spelt in reverse order!
Sheyenne, Roald Dahl also wrote adult short stories, you can introduce them to your parents :)
