4B's Big Time Rush!

Hey boys and girls!

I'm so excited about our coming dance performance during the Year-end school concert! Are you looking forward to it too?

We have been so busy after SA2 that we did not have many practices so far.
We must put our heads together to think of some new dance steps to replace the 'line-dance steps'.

I hope we can learn all the new steps well and do our best next week during all our practices and rehearsals on stage.

As for dance costume: we will be wearing jeans or pants (as we did during Rainbow Day 4) but we will need to change our T-shirts to more vibrant colours! Let's discuss this in class soon.

English Project Reflection

This term, pupils are required to work in group to do a group writing based on a given situation. The pupils worked in mixed-ability groups to:
- brainstorm for story ideas,
- write a draft for the group story,
- edit group story by adding suitable good phrases learnt in Spelling,
- publish group story using powerpoint presentation, and
- present the story to the class.

I've observed that most pupils are able to cooperate very well with their group members. During the oral presentation, almost all of you are confident in sharing your group stories to the class. Great job!

4B Rainbow Day Preparation

We had our first practice last week and we only managed to try out some moves.

One of the topics is on Dr Goh Keng Swee.
Dr Goh was Singapore's former* Deputy Prime Minister and our nation's economic* architect.
He died on Friday (14 May) after a long illness. He was 91.

Today Mrs Tong shared with the class on one of her favourite Roald Dahl's books: James and the Giant Peach. Selected excerpts from the novel were read in class.

Here is the story introduction:

One day, James gets a bag of magic crystals that will free him from life with his horrible aunts. In his excitement, James drops the bag and the crystals are sucked into the ground around the old peach tree. Something magical begins to happen to a peach at the tip of the tree – something that will truly change his life.

Then we watched the first part of the movie.

Today, we started on a new topic: Angles.
We went to our NHSB Math Room to work on some online activities.
It was fun rotating virtual protractor, trying to measure angles of different sizes online.
We must remember to place the vertex of an angle in the middle of the protractor.
With one line of the angle along the base line of the protractor, start to measure from the zero mark.

We went to the Math NHSB Room to engage in Fractions Activity-Centre lessons.

There were 7 centres altogether:
1) Mixed number centre
2) Improper fraction centre
3) Learn-to-add-fractions centre
4) I-can-add-fractions centre
5) Netbook centre (online applet)
6) Fraction games centre
7) Fraction quiz centre

Pupils were grouped into mixed-ability-teams.
All of you enjoyed learning together with friends.
I'm proud to see you confidently helping those team members who were in need.
I enjoyed observing the sparks in your eyes when you were curious to find out something new by exploring the given fraction dics.

Chinatown Learning Journey

We had a great learning journey to Chinatown on 19 April 2010.

Temple of Heavenly Happiness.

Singapore's olderst Hokkien temple.
Amazingly, no nails were used in building it!

The eager-to-learn pupils were with a knowledgeable tour guide, who was relating the history of the temple to the pupils.

The Ann Siang Hill was where bullock carts were used to transport water supply in Chinatown.
"Bullock carts water" = 'Niu Che Shui" in Chinese.

Monuments of Samsui Women who wore red headgears and worked on construction sites in olden Singapore.

On 25 March, Thursday, our class 4B will be heading to the Science Centre!
We have been extremely exciting about this trip since we heard the news on Monday!

CCP In-line skating

Remedial Classes

Hi boys and girls, the following is the schedule for P4 remedial classes for term 2:

Mother Tongue: 1.45 - 2.20 pm
English : 2.25 - 3.00 pm
Math : 3.05 - 3.45 pm

Pupils who are identified to attend remedial classes will be issued the respective consent form(s).
Remember to ask your parents to sign on the form and return it by Monday.
For whatever reasons and you could not attend the remedial classes, please ask your parents to write a note on the consent form itself. Thanks.
Let's work hard together to prepare ourselves well for the term's assessment.

We have come to the end of Term 1. It has been a busy yet fulfilling term.

I am glad to be able to meet up with most of you during the recent Meet Parents Session. I have also spoken to some of you via tele-communication. I will be calling a few more parents within the next 2 days. Let’s continue to partner one another to help our children to learn better.

For my Math Class, I’ve assigned Review 2 (p71-78) as holiday homework.

Please help to supervise your child in completing the assigned homework.
Do encourage your child to read widely during the holiday and plan time to have fun too.

For the new term, I would like each pupil to bring a dictionary for class use. It will be kept in class for daily use. Thank you.

English Alternative Assessment

Dear parents and 4B children,

As there was no formal CA1 for P4 this year, we have more time to involve the pupils in groupwork and project. Since last week, pupils have been working in their groups to research for information on animals to write their information report. Most of them went online to 'google' the necessary information while a few went to the library to search for non-fiction books.

In their respective groups, pupils have to work together to create powerpoint presentations! I saw group members helping one another; I also witnessed conflicts within groups and I have observed how the pupils managed to resolve their differences. I'm very proud of all of you!

Today, we had our oral presentations. Pupils were expected to stand in front of the class to present their powerpoint slideshows. I'm very delighted to see each and every one of them trying their best to present their projects confidently! Great effort! Keep it up!

Next, pupils need to do a self evaluation on their contributions to the groupwork. They are to reflect upon their working habits and team spirit.

I very glad that all of you have fared well!

Chines New Year Classroom Decoration

Congratulations 4B! We are awarded the Most Creative P4 Classroom in the CNY Classroom Decoration Competition!

All of us including parents have been busy for days involving in this activity. Although the class was very noisy during the craftwork and decorating time, we really had fun working together in our assigned small groups. Some of us were in-charge of the Chinese fans handicraft, others were decorating lanterns and other ornaments. The Tiger drawing group has put in a lot of time and effort in joining the puzzle pieces together.

Pupils were asked to reflect upon this activity in their weekly journal. Many of them wished to win the competition while deep in our hearts, we cherish the process of working together more.

I'm very proud of all of you! Great job! Excellent effort!

Prosthetic Legs

In unit 2: I am Special, we read about a special child, Jade who wrote diary to share her feelings. Jade was born without legs. After many years of saving up, her parents finally have enough money to get her a pair of prosthetic legs (artificial legs) so that she can pursue her dream of being a runner!

Conjunctions

This week, we started unit 2: I am Special!
We learnt the use of conjunctions (connectors) during our grammar lesson.
Conjunctions are linking words or connectors, which are used to join 2 or more statements to give additional information.

There are 3 types of Conjunctions learnt:
1) to show addition: and, besides, moreover, as well as...
eg. Andy enjoyed watching and playing sports.

2) to show contrast: but, however, although, even if...
eg. Sarah did not have a lot of money but she wanted to study in Britain.

3) to show choice: or, either... or, neither... nor
eg. You can have a new computer or you can continue to use the outdated model.

We have been reading several information texts for our English lessons.

We were all enchanted by the Hummingbird which beats its wings so fast (about 200 times per second!) that they make a humming sound; actually this was how hummingbirds got their name!

We also read about the Giant Anteater which has a coat of coarse*, black hair on its body and a long tubular** snout***.
